UNDERWATER 3D RECONSTRUCTION

However complex it may seem, non-invasive 3D reconstruction techniques, such as the photogrammetry and the 3D laser scanning, can be applied also to the underwater archaeological sites, with excellent results. In fact, they make possible to obtain highly faithful digital copies both of the finds and the sea floor where they lie.
In time, we have developed a method that, combining optical data coming from photo and video acquisitions, and acoustic data coming from bathymetric scanning, is able to obtain a high resolution and georeferenced virtual model of the whole marine area, exactly as in reality. A specific marine environment can be reproduced adding flora, fauna and graphic effects to the model, and this last can be finally used to realize virtual diving experiences.
