REEVALUATE: 3D Digitisation of the Domus of Tito Macro in Aquileia
- October 30, 2025
From 29th September to 1st October, the 3D Research team carried out a survey campaign at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aquileia, continuing the activities of cultural heritage selection and digitisation outlined in Task 2.1 of the REEVALUATE project: “Identification and digitisation of Cultural Heritage artefacts for use during the pilot phase.”
This update focuses on Pilot 3 of the project — a virtual experience designed to enhance the UNESCO site of Aquileia, with particular attention to the Domus of Tito Macro and the archaeological artefacts associated with it.
The intervention included two main phases: the 3D digitisation of selected artefacts preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia—part of the Italian Ministry of Culture and affiliated with the Historical Museum and Park of Miramare Castle, under the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Friuli Venezia Giulia—followed by the survey of the Domus of Tito Macro, managed directly by the Fondazione Aquileia, a partner of the REEVALUATE project.
After an in-depth phase of research and analysis of artefacts and documentation, a representative set of items and archaeological contexts linked to the Domus was acquired in 3D. These digital models will form the foundation for the development of an application that will allow users to explore and interact with the Domus and its artefacts directly from their own devices.
The survey was conducted using innovative aerial photogrammetry and high-resolution 3D scanning techniques, essential tools for generating accurate, high-quality digital assets. The resulting models will play a key role in REEVALUATE’s pilot phase, which will test new approaches to immersive visualization, participatory storytelling, and digital access to heritage content.
The aim is not only to deliver an engaging and meaningful experience for visitors, but also to contribute to the creation of a shared European digital archive, supporting the sustainable enjoyment and preservation of Cultural Heritage.
The virtual experience will be made available through Fondazione Aquileia’s website and the REEVALUATE project platform, currently under development.
Through this initiative, 3D Research contributes to the creation of a digital ecosystem dedicated to the enhancement of Europe’s cultural heritage, in full alignment with REEVALUATE’s mission: to rethink the relationship between culture, technology, and communities, fostering new forms of accessibility, participation, and knowledge sharing.
