Exploring the seafloor through virtual reality: The app developed by 3D Research for ISPRA in a RAI News report
Friday, 11 October 2024Last 27 September, during the European Research Night event, the Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA) allowed users to enjoy an exciting experience: an underwater virtual reality dive.
3D Research has developed an innovative app for ISPRA that allows users to virtually explore the evocative seafloor that scientists explore and map daily to study and protect deep-sea ecosystems.
The development of the app was made possible thanks to the collaboration with the Soprintendenza Nazionale per il Patrimonio Subacqueo, and in particular with Dr Barbara Davidde, coordinator of the Amphitrite project, which allowed the use of the three-dimensional models of the wrecks created as part of the project.
Visitors could explore marine environments in 3D using VR visors. Every detail was very immersive!
ISPRA scientists also presented the results of real-life research using state-of-the-art technology to study the seafloor at depths of up to 1,000 metres. For example, the Multibeam, an echo-sounder, provides detailed three-dimensional reconstructions of the seafloor and submerged objects.
In particular, a virtual reconstruction of the Bengala shipwreck, located in the Area Marina Protetta Capo Rizzuto, has been created. This immersive experience enables users to explore and inspect the wreck as if they were physically present, from the surface down to the seabed.
Francesco Rende, an ISPRA researcher, remarked during an interview with TGR RAI that the initiative has generated significant enthusiasm, particularly among younger audiences.
This initiative shows how science and technology can be made accessible and interesting for everyone.
